Do your eyes feel sore after a good cry? Many people keep physical and emotional health separate in their minds, but the reality is that they often affect each other. Strong or frequent emotions can cause very real physical problems or even trigger systemic illnesses.

TMJ disorders and stress are two such conditions that tend to go hand-in-hand. Keep reading to see just how toxic their relationship is!

What is A TMJ Disorder?

To understand TMJ disorders, you need to know what TMJ actually means. TMJ is short for “temporomandibular joint,” which is a small, hinge-like joint that enables you to open and close your mouth. You have one on each side of your head, and they’re both located in front of the ears, connecting the lower jawbone to the skull.

A TMJ disorder is when the temporomandibular joint can’t operate as efficiently as it should, often as a result of being overworked or injured. The condition can cause jaw pain, chronic headaches, tinnitus, and all sorts of other issues.

How Stress Can Contribute to TMJ Disorders

People respond differently to stress. Many, though, do subconsciously grind or clench their teeth. Over time, this unfortunate habit strains the TMJ and can make an existing disorder worse or even cause the disorder.

The TMJ, like other bones and joints in your body, is generally durable, but excess pressure that’s applied frequently will wear it out. It’s similar to how your neck or shoulder muscles might feel tight after keeping them tense for too long.

Treating TMJ Disorder & Addressing Stress

Dentists commonly treat TMJ disorders one of two ways:

By prescribing a customized oral appliance that will reduce the pressure exerted on the joint when worn.

By making very slight adjustments to the shape of a couple of teeth, evening out how pressure is distributed across the jawbone.

If stress is contributing to your disorder, it’s important to address that as well. Teeth grinding and clenching, biting fingernails, and other jaw-intensive habits are your body’s way of telling you that you’re overwhelmed. A therapist can help you identify and cope with the source of your stress so you can hopefully stop overworking your TMJ.

In summary, stress is a complicated emotion that can lead to unforeseen physical conditions like TMJ disorder. If you experience jaw pain or any of the other common symptoms of TMJ disorders, talk to your dentist and therapist about treatment. They’ll help you find the solution that works best for you.

About the Author

Dr. Carroll R.
