Many people feel nervous about getting dental work done, especially if they have a more complex procedure to undergo, like a root canal. It’s natural to want to avoid services that might hurt, but this treatment helps more than it hurts.

Understanding how a root canal benefits you might ease your frayed nerves regarding your upcoming appointment. Continue reading to learn 3 reasons getting one is a positive thing!

Reason #1: It Alleviate Aches

In the past, root canals may have developed a reputation for causing pain, leading many patients to believe their procedure will inevitably be long or agonizing. However, thanks to contemporary dental technology and techniques, today, this treatment usually alleviates more discomfort than it causes.

If you have a severely decayed or damaged tooth or have developed a persistent or sharp toothache, then there’s a good chance bacteria in your mouth have penetrated the tender nerves inside. This results in infection and inflammation that can spread to your neighboring teeth, connective tissues, or jawbone, if left unaddressed. A root canal involves creating a small opening to access the pulp inside to clear away diseased or injured materials, providing much-needed relief.

Reason #2: It Can Help Avoid an Extraction

Many nervous visitors wonder if there are other options to address their troublesome tooth that don’t involve a root canal. Unfortunately, your dentist likely suggested it because they already determined that other fixes, like a tooth-colored filling, couldn’t sufficiently repair the damage.

Often, the only alternative to a root canal is an extraction and replacement. You might think this option is more cost-effective and simpler, but there are additional risks that come with removals you might not have considered. For instance, your jawbone starts to thin once a tooth goes missing, which can cause dental drifting, sunken cheeks, additional facial wrinkles, and eventually, further tooth loss.

Reason #3: It Doesn’t Have to Hurt

Your dentist understands that you may be feeling scared and will do everything they can to help you feel calm and relaxed throughout your procedure. For example, before getting started, they’ll likely apply a local anesthetic to numb the area. You might feel pressure while they work, but not outright pain.

Many providers also offer different options for sedation, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) that is inhaled through a mask placed over your nose while they work, oral conscious sedation prescribed as a pill, or IV sedation that’s administered intravenously.
