If you just had a tooth extraction, you may be ready to finish up healing and get back to a-okay oral health. The procedure might’ve been easier than you were expecting thanks to modern dentistry, but is there anything you should worry about afterward? Dry socket is a condition that can occur, but it is preventable. Keep reading to learn more about it to ensure a smooth recovery.

So, What Exactly is Dry Socket?

When you have a tooth removed, your body will need to heal over the empty socket. It does this with the help of a blood clot. It ensures that the space stays clean while covering the exposed nerve endings. However, there is a possibility of it becoming dislodged or dissolved, causing dry socket. This often happens if you drink something through a straw or a beverage that is too hot, irritating the tissues around the extraction site.

Do I Have Dry Socket?

This condition is followed by severe discomfort, often within the first few days after your procedure. The pain can sometimes spread across your face and head. Not only that, but you may have a bad taste or breath in your mouth. If you look at the extraction site, you might also see that the socket looks empty, or you see the jawbone through it.

How Can I Avoid Getting Dry Socket?

The good news is that dry socket is avoidable! You don’t have to deal with this painful condition by taking these easy steps:

  • Eat soft foods, like mashed potatoes or applesauce, since they don’t require much chewing. Avoid anything sticky or tough, as they can cause the blood clot to dislodge.
  • Do not drink out of a straw because the sucking motion can pull at the vital healing component. Additionally, anything hot, carbonated, caffeinated, or alcoholic can dissolve it. Stick to water as it’s gentle and washes away harmful bacteria.
  • Give yourself a couple of days to fully rest. Your body can then focus more on your recovery.
  • Stick with your oral hygiene routine! Gently brush your teeth and tongue to remove any plaque that can spell trouble. Holding warm salt water in your mouth and lightly shaking your head can help remove any debris and encourage healing.

Although you may be worried about dry socket, keep these easy tips in mind! You can prevent yourself from developing it and have a smooth recovery process. In no time, you’ll have a problem-free smile.
